How it works

One rule set, applied in a fixed order

Nothing is estimated by proportion or averaged across the year. Your income is annualised, then each rule is applied in the sequence the ATO applies it.

01
Annualise on the PAYG basis

52 weeks or 26 fortnights, so weekly and fortnightly figures match a payslip rather than a calendar year.

02
Separate super from the base

A package quoted including super is divided down first, so tax is never applied to the contribution.

03
Brackets, levy, then loans

Resident brackets, the 2% Medicare levy, then that year’s HELP method — marginal from 1 July 2026, income-based before it.

04
Report cash and super separately

Employer super never appears inside take-home pay. Totals are rounded for display and calculated unrounded.

Where your income sits in the 2026–27 scale

Of the $150,000 taxable, the top slice is taxed at 39%. Everything below it is taxed at the lower bracket rates, which is why the effective rate on the whole income is much lower than the marginal one.

Is super included in my salary?

Depends on your contract. "Plus super" means employer super is paid on top; "including super" means it comes out of the quoted package. Use the toggle to match your offer.

How is HELP repayment worked out?

From 1 July 2026 repayments are marginal: 15% of repayment income between $67,000 and $125,000, and 17% above that. On the $150,000 entered above that is $12,950 for the year. Your payslip withholding may differ from the final annual amount.

Why does my payslip differ from this estimate?

Payslips use PAYG withholding schedules, which approximate your annual liability per pay cycle. Offsets, deductions and variable income reconcile at tax return time.

Does this include the Medicare levy?

Yes. The 2% Medicare levy is applied to taxable income unless you switch the exemption on in the advanced settings. The Medicare levy surcharge is modelled too: set private hospital cover and dependants in the advanced settings and the surcharge tier is worked out from the family threshold.

Is this financial advice?

No. PayLens produces estimates from published Australian rules so you can compare options. It does not account for your full circumstances and is not personal financial, tax or credit advice.

Which rules does this use?

The 2026–27 resident rule set (AU-2026.27-v1), built from ATO and Federal Register sources. Each year keeps its own brackets, HELP method and super guarantee rate, so switching the tax year above changes the calculation rather than relabelling it. Historic rules.
